Does Face Yoga Actually Work?

Scientific evidence · JAMA Dermatology study · realistic timeline · what results to expect · all ages

Yes — face yoga works. The results come from strengthening the muscles beneath your skin, not from surface treatments or products.

Your face has over 40 muscles, and most of them attach directly to the skin. When you train them consistently, they become denser and more lifted — and the skin attached to them responds accordingly.

What does the research say?

A 2018 study published in JAMA Dermatology by Northwestern University researchers found that participants who followed a structured facial exercise program for 20 weeks showed measurable improvements in cheek fullness and natural lift — assessed by dermatologists who didn't know which participants had done the exercises.

What results can I expect and when?

  • Weeks 1–2: Improved circulation and radiance

  • Weeks 3–4: Reduced tension in the jaw and temples, more rested appearance around the eyes

  • Weeks 6–12: More definition in the cheekbones, softening of fine lines, visible lift in the mid-face

Structural changes take time. Measure results at 12 weeks, not 12 days.

What makes the difference?

Consistency matters more than anything else. 15 minutes of daily practice outperforms one long session per week. Technique also matters — exercises need to target the right muscles with the right resistance to produce real results.

Is it for me?

Face yoga works across all ages and skin types because it targets the underlying muscular structure, which responds to training regardless of age. There is no "too late" to start.
